One of the two reasons stated for this theory include the fact that sales numbers haven't been released for Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned, the first of two episodes of downloadable content exclusive to Xbox 360. CNBC says that "analysts speculate the number [of sales] to be at or below the 1 million mark." So 1 million downloads at $20 each ends up being $20 million. Let's pretend that the second episode does the same later this year. $40 million made off the episodes is less than the $50 million that Microsoft paid Rockstar Games to keep them exclusive.
The second reason that CNBC stated had to do with poor sales numbers for GTA: Chinatown Wars. We'll see what happens in the future for the series, but as Jon Stewart might point out...it might be time for CNBC to take a closer look at the news and advice that they churn out.
